Those of you who have been in the industry for some time
might be able to remember some of the more colourful articles that I have penned
calling for electricians and electrical contractors alike to join the data
comms cabling revolution……and yes…it is a mouthful!
Maybe taking a more refined approach may perhaps, bear more
fruit for those of you that are still ‘on the fence’.
Busting the Myths!
Let’s clear up a number of misunderstandings about twisted
pair copper communications cabling: yes…….the test equipment is more expensive……..and
yes, there are some rules that you need to follow…..and yes, there is a maximum
distance that a standard twisted pair cable can realistically send signals over……..and
for goodness sake…..be careful of CCA cables…they are a menace and simply won’t
work!
If you are intending to terminate and test fibre optic
cabling, there is a lot to learn and the equipment that you use to terminate
and test the fibre optic cable is expensive…..
So whats stopping you?
Will I need to be trained? My answer here is a ‘qualified’ yes…..
You know how to pull cable in………yes, twisted pair cable
needs careful handling when being installed but you will be careful, won’t you…..after
all, you don’t particular want to have to go back to an installation to carry
out rectifications etc………so avoiding this is best tackled by attending a
training course. If you come on to one of ‘taster’ 1 day courses, you will get
an insight into the world of communications cabling – copper twisted pair and
fibre optic cables…….yes, we will open your eyes to the possibilities of increasing
your earning capacity…….can’t be bad!
