Why Invest In Training

“…too often in the past there has been a tendency for businesses to cut back on investing in training as soon as a recession begins, but all the research suggests that this is not the best thing to do.”

- Sir Chris Humphries, Chief Executive, UK Commission for Employment and Skills.

The benefits of a training cannot be underestimated.
And yet time and again in the recent difficult economic and business conditions endured by the UK, one of the first things that was either reduced or cut was the commitment to attending a training course due to budget constraints.

When times are tough, there is absolutely no doubt that the appeal is there for businesses to cut back and try to “ride out” the rough seas, by reducing expenses as much as possible. This may well be a proper thing for some businesses to do!

But consider this, training is an investment in the future, and to be well trained and skilled is the lifeblood of any business. Falling business activity or a sharp increase in competition for the same amount of business can lead some companies into new markets – in other words, getting trained in those new markets is imperative……..Businesses can also find training as a way of finding themselves in the position of having to do less with more, or having to work in new and previously unfamiliar ways.

In all of these situations a well trained workforce is a committed workforce, and in addition, is normally one which is highly motivated as well. A workforce that is well trained is also willing to adapt to new situations and picking up these new skills, quickly evolves from something that would be nice to something that is essential. Trained workforces allow businesses to become much more competitive and adopt new technologies, processes and approaches that can yield rich rewards.

Total Electrical Training is playing its part in the return to economic growth by providing cost-effective training to both businesses and individuals. Rumours......DisInformation........Untruths

There was a certain quote that became....well shall we say, infamous.....lets remind ourselves what was said....
There are known knowns; there are things we know that we know.
There are known unknowns; that is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don't know
"psst, you wanna know some info....".
United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld

What am I chuntering on about.....again, I hear you say..........I am, of course referring to the fact that there are in life, some things that are certain........death and taxes being one of them......

The other certain thing is that the Wiring Regulations is published as a new edition, roughly every 15 to 18 years with a number of amendments in each edition taking place - these are differentiated by the colour of each amended edition.....simple?.....

So lets scotch those rumours right now.....there is no 18th edition being published next year.....it is likely that we wont see the 18th edition for at least another 6 to 7 years, if not longer............sorry to all those that were getting hot under the collar on some forums, who for whatever reason, love to moan........

So stop worrying..................

Why do we need health and safety........?

A shocking and frankly, terrible report has come out of Qatar, the host nation for the 2022 World Cup.

If ever anyone challenges the health and safety legislation that prevails in the UK, then I suggest that you simply look at this video........ it is heart rending and to be honest, an outright scandal.

The green shoots of recovery - or are they "green seeds"?

The classic British summer held off to provide us all with a taste of sunshine - lifting all of our moods and those of our customers.....but you know what they say, "one swallow does not a summer make"......

Seeing business activity picking up, has always been the touchstone of any recovery - and thinking positively is as an important contributor to any sustained business recovery, from what is, by far, the longest and deepest recession for a generation........

And now we are seeing if not green shoots, maybe green seeds, what do we hear form commentators - skills shortages and a lack of trained personnel. You only have to look at the offshore wind turbine industry to se what the implications are. And lets not forget, a lot of skills have simply been lost either through time served people retiring or because of a lack of government will and backing.

But.....we are positive here and always have been!! - and consider this: investing in additional skills and qualifications can only enhance your chances of not only winning business but actually increasing your profitability.

The message is clear then - Be prepared, get trained and get qualified and be ready to do business!

the rise of the "mock" on line exam.......

OK...lets start with a reminder of the actual definition of the word "mock" and then we will apply this definition to the rise of the 17th  edition mock exam........

  • If used in the context of verb
Mock means to tease or laugh at, in a scornful or contemptuous manner.

  • if used in the context of an adjective
Mock means that is isn't authentic or real, but is without the intention to deceive.

  • If used in the context of a noun
Mock means that is is an object of derision.

Now then I hear you all say...what on earth has this got to do with the 17th edition and it's relationship to the electric qualifications that we and others deliver.....

Well, prompted by some casual "surfing" on the interweb today, I was confronted by a lot of websites, some of these websites proclaiming things like "I decided not to include an automatic timer because if you can’t work how to time yourself when doing a mock exam, you’re hardly going to be a competent electrician are you?"......and "This is a mock exam for the 17th edition (C&G 2382) exam. All the questions are from past exam papers. In order to simulate the exam conditions we recommend using a stopwatch set to two hour."...(they forgot to put an "s"!!)

Why all the concern about mock exams?

Because these 17th edition mock exams that are springing up all over the internet  are simply not the real deal!! Moreover, the answers to some of the questions are actually wrong!!....and if that wasn't all, one of the real issues here is that some of you that have attempted to sit an exam at a centre without completing the full course may well be seriously disadvantaged which may result in a poor  level of understanding of the "regs" plus you may well fail the real exam....and ask yourself the question, would you ask a paramedic to sit an exam after taking a mock test.......oh and by the way, he's then asked to do a resuscitation as part of his exam - doesn't even bear thinking about....

Don't fail....pass with us
So why oh why take the risk with your profession, yes profession and entrust it to a "mock exam.....yes, you are right, it is silly!!

You may say that we are biased.....damn right we are!!.....we are biased in providing the best training, the best advice and the best all round experience for our delegates - and I and my colleagues make absolutely no apology for our bias..........

New training centre opens

New training centre opens marking expansion for leading training provider

Training room 1

Training room 2

Total Electrical Training and its sister company Total Comms Training; have teamed up with Specialist Instrument Services to offer a comprehensive range of training to the electrical and comms cabling industries. As part of the strategic alliance, the course offerings will be available from late June 2013 at the state of the art SIS training facilities in Norwich. Bringing these courses into a geographical area, often overlooked will for the first time enable electricians, engineers and comms cabling installers to be trained to a nationally recognised level

The process of expansion marks a bold initiative for the company with the course offerings mirroring those on offer at the company’s headquarters in Harlow Essex. The opening of this second centre also enables the company to increase the number of courses on offer at highly competitive prices. The other significant factor was that in East Anglia alone, there are a number of professionals who have ruled out gaining qualifications simply because attending a course would involve additional overnight expenses which will be a thing of the past.

Commenting on the expansion, Operations Director Gareth Whitney says, “we have been looking for a while for a strategic alliance with a nationally based company. Working with SIS give us an opportunity for us to expand our business activities with the added benefit of a close relationship. I firmly believe that the markets that we will now be serving will also see significant economic benefits, especially when applied to those individuals who are involved in series of courses.’
